Museums

Maine has some other great art museums besides the Portland Museum of Art that are perhaps not necessarily on your radar.  For future planning, I would like to suggest an upcoming exhibit at the Bates College Museum of Art at the Olin Arts Center in Lewiston.  Beginning in June and running until October, Bates College Museum of Art will be featuring Maine’s own Dahlov Ipcar in a show that is drawn mainly from private collections.  Find out more about this exciting exhibit at the Bates College Museum of Art web site – http://www.bates.edu/museum/exhibitions/upcoming/dahlov-ipcar-a-life-in-the-arts/

ART @ the Library

Have you seen our new program? With the help of local artist, Isabelle Files, and the children’s room staff we have started a program called ART @ the Library. Once a month on a Tuesday evening at 6:00 in the Children’s room we are doing an art project for all ages. The first event was September 26th, featuring origami. We had fun making animals, boxes, and other items. On October 24th we did apple and leaf printing. Our youngest attendees loved working with the paint, and we got very creative.

Look at those beautiful apple prints!
Someone is embellishing their apple print!

On November 7th we did collages by cutting pictures out of magazines and making a poster with the photos. This was a fun and relaxing event with photos of animals being the hot commodity.

Animals for a collage!
Magazines – great for collage pictures!

It has been wonderful to see the adults working alongside the children on these projects. Come in and join us for the Tuesday, December 5th at 6:00 to decorate Holiday cookies and keep checking our Facebook page and calendars for our next ART @ the Library. If you have some ideas of some things you would like to do, just give us a call at 207-582-6894.

June is Art Month at the Gardiner Public Library!

Local artist, Mario Del Rio, a.k.a. Cuba, is sponsoring the month of June at Gardiner Public Library for our Year of Reading.

Mario, or Cuba as he says people know him, has donated at piece of his artwork for our June drawing.  Kan 2 Kanvas is the name of this new business venture for Mario.  His medium is spray paint and water in a spray bottle.  All of his art is as “green” as he can make it.  Mario uses recycled or found materials when he is creating – an example of this can be found at the library.  This particular “canvas” is actually the top of a T.V. table that Mario and his manager, Devon Tracy, re-appropriated for a new use.
Mario does custom art work as well – “anything from cell phone covers to cars” is how he puts it.  All of his works are what he refers to as “Astrological Spraypaint”.  Most – if not all – of his paintings are 3D, so if you have the glasses . . .
When asked, Mario suggested art as our theme, specifically “spray paint art”, “graffiti” or “urban art”.  All great ideas, but we are being as general about our theme as possible, so art it is!
Come on in, explore an item involving art in some way, and enter your name for our drawing!
