New Year, New You

This time of year we hear a lot about resolutions. We mean well when we resolve to do better, but often it’s not long before we abandon our plans.  This is usually because we set our expectations too high; as a result, we are hard on ourselves for not following through…

Some things we could probably all resolve to do (without causing stress in the process): move more, eat healthier, and of course, read more!
Whatever your new year’s resolutions are this year, remember that the public library is a wonderful resource for you. Whether you want to lose weight, learn to cook, go back to school, or save money, there are many resources at the library to help you along the way.  Following are some interesting choices you may want to read:

The author describes his journey without money, bartering his way from an apple to a house in Hawaii.

Visiting the library is a great way to start off the New Year on the right foot!

THE CHILDREN’S ROOM

The value of the public library is often underestimated, especially with regard to the impact on education. Specifically, the public library plays a major role in helping children learn to read, as well as develop reading skills and comprehension.
For example, the Children’s Room here at Gardiner Public Library offers a wealth of knowledge. The Children’s Collection is a vast assortment of print (as well as books on CD) which allows children to be exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction. Having such a vast collection contributes to student success beginning at an early age.
Another advantage of the Children’s Room at GPL is our summer reading program, which helps children increase their reading achievement, as well as keeping them from losing progress made during the school year.
Even pre-schoolers can take advantage of the Children’s Room throughout the year by attending Story Hour. Listening to an adult model good reading is a wonderful way to spark children’s interest in reading.
Having access to a wide variety of books is so important to children’s literacy development. Please come visit the Children’s Room at GPL, and bring home an exciting stack of books for your child to delve into!

Teen Time at the Library!

Teen Time has started up again this year. Every Thursday afternoon after school a bus load of about 15-30 students are dropped off for about 3 hours to hang out in the library. They are given a snack from a local eatery, then socialize, play games, and do homework.

On Thursday of this week and next week they will get tours of the Gardiner Fire Station. Captain Pat Saucier gave the students a wonderful tour, they got to climb into the fire trucks and had all their questions answered, like “How much does a fire truck cost?”, “How long are the shifts?” and “Where do they sleep?”

Anyone willing to spend time with the teens playing games, showing them a craft or just sitting and talking to them, are welcome to come on Thursday afternoons and help out with the students. Just give Ginni Nichols, YA Librarian a call at 582-3312. We look forward to having these students every Thursday afternoon and showing them what we have to offer at the Gardiner Public Library.
